A new icon from Moth!

It is the end of the week, thank goodness. I have planned and planned and organised and helped others and finally today taught some classes.  I have two Year 13 classes, two Year 9 classes, one Year 12 class and one Years 11-12-13 mixed class doing Level 3 work (Year 13 work). In some ways easier than the spread of last year where I had one of every level, but the mixed class, Ethics and Philosophy, has thirty girls in it. OMG they fill the whole room and there was no air left by half past two this afternoon!! I even had one girl sitting at my desk! I introduced them to the idea that if you took 100 people to represent the world, 6 of them would own 59% of the world's wealth, 80 of them would have substandard housing, seventy of them would not read, fifty of them would be malnourished. The girls were pretty horrified. And like Freedom Writers, I have decided to get them to keep a diary. So at the end of every lesson, they have five minutes or so to write a response to the lesson. Most wrote half a page!

But since we do have some wealth and are grateful for it, we're going out to dinner tonight at eight, kind of for Christy's birthday, and for Chinese New Year too. I gave the children some money in red envelopes yesterday, which was fun! We're going to the Big Thumb, just off Courtenay Place. It has great dishes and all the children love it.

I am so totally exhausted, I can hardly think straight. I fell asleep working last night, and was jerked awake when the phone rang at half past ten!!! It was a friend wanting to know if Steve wanted to go to some show or other. I said Steve was asleep!! I never really call people after about nine-fifteen at night. It just seems too intrusive into their private night lives. I feel people are entitled to a little time without the outside world butting in. At least the call got me up and working again and I snuck into bed at quarter to twelve.

School is good. I have a Mass to organise for next week but I have sorted the jobs for all the girls, the music with the music teacher and the timing with the priest.  So I am hoping it all goes smoothly. It's always a big thing to have a Mass to run for the school. This one is focused on doing well academically for the year.

And unbelievably, someone tried to hijack a plane from Blenheim to Christchurch today. Awful, huh. She stabbed two pilots but they managed to get rid of her and lock the cockpit door. You can read about it here http://www.stuff.co.nz/4392665a10.html It looks like she was isolated from the Somali community.  It's so sad, when people get so desperate for something in their lives that they do such a thing. The Somali community are very upset as it will bracket them with her, and they fear there could be a racial backlash. That would be sad, too.  I hope she was just one desperate person, not part of anything bigger.  Terrorism really doesn't happen here. And that may sound naive but no one really wants us for hostages! Half the world would say, 'Who did they kidnap? NZers? Where are they from? Isn't that in Australia?'  Heh.

Hee! Me, too. I know I need more sleep, to stay well, because I can feel my body protesting, but sleep just doesn't come in large amounts, even when I get the chance, so *shrug* I guess like you I just don't need that much.

My mother always thought you should only phone after about 9.30 p.m. if there was an emergency and somehow I've always felt the same!

Glad the new classes are going well. Our classes were usually thirty upwards - aren't yours?

Another lesson that often makes them think (and seems to go hand in hand with the 100 people) is the one about showing all the time so far on earth as a day and how late humans joined in and how our wars and wrecking the environment are so last minute. I can't remember the details but it's quite sobering.

We didn't hear about your hijacker here - but we do get some news from NZ and we know you aren't in Australia!! But then a lot of people, even in Europe, think Wales and Scotland are in England...

28-30 was normal when I was teaching fifteen years ago, but now, and particularly in a small college like ours, we try really hard to keep senior classes at 25 or less. And because my class revolves around a lot of discussion, even more reason to keep it smaller.

Yes, any lesson that drills home the desperate need to DO something for our world, is worth it. Christy has a site that told her today that if and when all the countries that signed at the 2002 Monterrey Conference and Jo'burg Summit to give 0.7% of their national income to poor countries do so, the amount each year would be enough to effectively end hunger and extreme poverty in the world. The only countries that have done so so far are Denmark, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. UK is nearly there. We are not :-(

I try not to phone after 9.30pm, definitely not after 10pm... on the other hand I am happy to receive calls from other people at any time of day or night!!

I'm happy once I know who it is, but have to admit to a frisson of anxiety if the phone rings late!

The lessons sound interesting, I like the journal idea. We always had to write them at the beginning of class, I like having it at the end much better. Then you have something to write about!

Thanks, yeah, I think so, too, it's less forced than the old, 'right, everyone get out your journals and ... write' recipe. And this way, we keep a kind of record-reflection of the great discussions so they don't get lost as I noticed they did last year. No one wanted to write them up for homework so this way it gets done while we're still together as a team. A big team. Wow. Thirty plus me... should be a lot of fun though.

Yeah, that's a good thought too. That way they can look back and remember the discussions. Should be very helpful!

I think so, because otherwise some of them would say, 'we just talk in Mrs O'B's classroom' and not value the discussions enough.
