Journey north..again

So we made it once more to Tauranga. It rained on the way. Nay, it POURED. Cats and dogs. The raindrops on the Desert Road were more like splats, each one hitting the windscreen with at least a 4cm diameter. Perhaps we were, at that point, very close to the actual clouds clinging to the invisible mountains just a few hundred metres to our left.

Visibility was poor but we forged ahead, encountering more violent rain north of Ngongotaha, where they've been trying to fix the road. This is a road that dips briefly but almost vertically into a small canyon quite close, I swear, to the underworld. It is extremely narrow, very steep, the bridges and hairpin bends are One Lane Only, the cliffs are solid walls of stone and the dark green bush is glossy and thick, clinging to the gaps between sheer rocky crags. The sun does not penetrate this cleft on the brink of hell. The rain, on the other hand, lends one to fear of being trapped in a washout or swept deeper towards hell on a torrent of rushing rainwater.

I maintained my calm by singing along to the soundtrack of The Big Easy while Christy dozed and Finn zoned out in the back seat with Christy's iPod and a huge pair of black headphones.

So we are once again in the North. In the morning, I shall go out and buy some decent coffee.

Hope you have a nice visit.
You must be sure to use your second paragraph in one of your stories one day...

You made me see it! And if you had hairpin bends you know what it's like driving in Portugal!
Have a good rest, good coffee and a good trip home.
