Morning, my happy readers *g* I guess it's rather nice to know people read me in their mornings. You're not always a chatty bunch out loud but that doesn't matter, it's just nice to know you're there *g* really nice, actually!! Quite warming late at night when everyone is in bed! I usually write these thoughts as I go to bed, and that's what I am going to do now, at half past ten for once. I was wondering about the dentist today, why I hate it so intensely and I decided there are quite a few reasons. I'm gonna list them, so switch off while I come to terms with myself. And I've been here before but it helps to let it all out...
I apparently bit my first dental nurse, when I was four. She refused to have me back so my mother had to drive me to a different one. This one had one of those snow globes. I liked her.
Then we were bussed off to the Murder House. I hated every minute, it hurt, the dental trainees would stare at an array of needles lined up on a yellowed holder, there must have been about twenty or more and they were never sure which one to pick. Their hands would hover over the needles nervously. Once they drilled the edge of my tongue. My fault of course - the matron was summoned, because tongues bleed quite spectacularly, and she told me to keep my tongue out of the way in future. I can still recall her saying that. My brother asked to not go on the same days I was going. They tried putting me in a bay window, a chair all by itself. Finally the matron told my mother the fair haired green eyed children were always the worst, and they sent me to the dentist.
He was young and vibrant with dark bushy eyebrows and scared the hell out of me. I suffered under his hands for more than ten years.

The guy I have now, PJ, is amazing. He is kind and caring and calls himself a SNAD - sensitive new age dentist. He's a Serb and he's lovely. He knows how tense I get and he tries hard to be reassuring, to tell me what is coming next and to give me breaks so I don't implode right there on the chair. So why do I still hate it? I hate having someone so close to me, physically close, invasively close. I hate the crowding and the vulnerability. I can't just lie back and think of... anything! I shake and my hands wring in knots and my feet turn up, and he knows all this and says so, and I try really hard to say, 'hey, I'm okay, it's okay, don't worry'. I don't want to hurt his feelings, he tries so hard. I guess you could get dentist counselling. But I get there. I haven't fainted or thrown up yet, so I think I'm doing okay *g* I mean, I threw up when they stitched my head not that very long ago, and that was the same sort of feeling. So I do have SOME self control at the dentist!

And on other fronts, the kitchen ceiling now looks great. A friend popped round and agreed to take our oak dressing table and po cupboard in return for teaching Finn violin this term and beyond! And she stayed on while our children played together and helped me sort the boys' room out. Nice, huh. So. Breathing Space awaits me now... you have a ... OMG nice day *g*

I have a RL friend with a dentist phobia. She has to go to the dental hospital and be strapped into a chair even for a check-up. I don't like going to the dentist but I can cope - I never had any bad experiences as a child so maybe that's the key! Our dentist insists everybody sees the hygienist evry six moths and himself the alternate six months - so that's four visits a year (otherwise I'd be 'struck off' his list) and one's due on Tuesday.

OMG! I would hate to have that loss of control! I think I can keep myself in check! I think I'm just supremely uncomfortable but not phobic!

(Hee, that's a mothy kind of typo)
People I know who attend the same dental practice as me fear the hygienist more than the dentist. I could name three who dread her and her evil ministrations. I'm not going near her! That could just be my undoing.

Yes - that's my special typo!!!!

The dentist wins because he can delete us from his list and there is a shortage of dentists in UK. In particular, there is a shortage of National Health lists, where the price of treatments is capped/subsidised (from our National Insurance payments) so if you're on a list you daren't upset the dentist! My sister-in-law isn't on a NH list and has to pay three times the earth for anything!

hehe...that's me!

I never liked going to the dentist, but I've never had it quite so bad. I do hate having someone so close like that too, so you'd think I would dislike it more.

I don't want to hurt his feelings, he tries so hard.
I bet he understands. I bet lots of people have the same reaction at the dentist.

I imagine a lot of people hate going to the dentist. It's not like you can make small talk or anything while you sit there either LOL!

Maybe you can just shut it out for a short period of time *g*

True, and yet every time I go to the dentist, they insist on trying.

"How's your dad doing?"
"arghalarg"
"And how's school?"
"otrglarg"
"And the pharmacy?"
"artangl"
