The quake...

I was awake this morning at about half past four for no apparent reason. I went to the bathroom then went back to bed. I patted the cat and lay down. Then there was an earthquake. The cat sat up and I lay still, hoping it wouldn't get too big or I'd have to grab my glasses! If the big one hits, it's usually the first one. The quake rolled on for a while then a car drove by and I heard the thump of the Saturday paper arriving in the driveway. Things were back to normal.

Well, we thought so. Until the morning news on television. The earthquake had hit Christchurch, one of the biggest cities in the South Island. Look here:

It's pretty mind-numbing. It's our city that is built on fault lines. Christchurch was never expecting such a massive hit. Luckily at this stage there are no fatalities. The main businesses were all closed at that time.

I'm going to check all our emergency supplies. Just in case.

The pictures are just scary... The damage a few minutes can cause is always mind-boggling.

I hope there won't be too many aftershocks.

The aftershocks seemed to go for ages down there. We just can't quite believe it. I was there just late last year and there are lots of old buildings. Now, a heap of them seem to have fallen down. It's our town that's built for earthquakes, not that one!

Really scary. And do you know what is also scary? We didn't know the extent of it. Colin says it was mentioned in passing on the news this morning but there's no report on Google or on the BBC website. Floods in Australia and a plane crash with some European travellers - that's all the Antipodean news we've had in headlines today. I suppose it's because the are 'no fatalities as yet'. Well, thank goodness there weren't but the damage looks as if it will wreck people's lives for some time to come.

Keep your emergency supplies up to date!! ::hugs::

Yeah, well, I got up to watch tennis and there were no 'news' interruptions on that channel. It wasn't until we heard about it by phone that we changed to a news channel. Then our home channel was full of it. Because nothing much happens in Christchurch, the young reporter was quite hilariously excited and flustered. But reports about the damage seem to just grow and grow.

And there was an awful plane crash on Fox Glacier that killed 9. Tough day in NZ.

Thanks *hugs you back* . I have now checked and refreshed our water supply. It's a howling gale here tonight. I could hardly get the rabbit cover back on his hutch and he was running in circles on the deck, sopping wet, waiting for me to get it ready so he could get in and get to bed!!

Still not headline news here. Those pictures were horrific.

Hope your rabbit got warm and dry again. And that the hutch keeps him safe if there's another big quake! Cats and dogs usually sense the air pressure or something, don't they? And I suppose rabbits do too but a tame one has less choice of anywhere to hide than a cat.

Good to hear you're all okay.

Thanks. We are lucky. Wellington is on the fault line so we're used to being prepared (well, technically!) for a quake but no one really expected a huge one in Christchurch.

Heard about the quake of course, thought about you straight away and was relieved it was the South Island rather than the North. It's terrible for the people of Christchurch and my heart goes out to them.

Do everything you can to make sure you are safe.

Thank you! I immediately refreshed our emergency water supply! It just doesn't seem real. I was down there just at the end of last year and it's a very pretty, peaceful kind of old-fashioned town. It seems just such a surprise to see it in ruins all over the place.

I heard about the earthquake on cnn at the airport! I thought of you, and hoped you were okay!

Hey this entry didn't come into my mail box!
Yes, it's on the other island so I only felt the earthquake!

And congratulations! If you scroll back, I made you a happy wedding pic! xxx

I thought about you all day when I heard the news but was relived when I brushed up on my Kiwi geography thanks to wikipedia.
