So having a solar powered watch in the deep dark depths of winter isn't such a good idea. It just won't charge up enough!

Tomorrow my secret circle meets again, me and all the Year 10 students in a lunchtime gathering in my room, to share... whatever they want. And they do cry. Our girls have tough lives. And I know I had some tough stuff to deal with growing up, but these girls get beaten, kept at home, made to do house and church work endlessly or mind younger children, are abused sexually, are very poor and so on and so on. One of my girls has had to leave to have a baby. She lives in a two bedroom council flat with her mother, step-father and five younger siblings. How, you may ask, will they care for a baby in this? What will their futures be?

One of the problems is our young girls have no imagination for the future. I say what will you be when you grow up, can you see yourself at 25 or 30 being successful at something? And they just shrug. I suggested today that one of my year 9s set a goal for the next fortnight of having high standards for her work. She agreed willingly, then frowned, "What does 'high standards' mean?"

I have worked and worked this week and it's only Wednesday. Still, I'm happy with what I achieved. I might just keep going until it's all done! Wouldn't that be nice.

Your secret circle is a great thing Jenn. I am so impressed with you offering this to the young women! You are so right about teens not seeing the long term in things, especially those with hard lives and issues to deal with. Keeping hope alive within them is very important to their transcendence out of these sad lives and into a better future. The best you can do is help them realize that they matter and they can control their own destiny by making good choices. You are brilliant!

It must be heartbreaking to hear some of the girl's stories. I think your obvious care for them must be a very positive thing in their lives.

Good luck with getting all the work done - it would be nice but I find it usually doesn't happen!

Your secret circle is clearly an important thing for these girls and even if you only manage to change things for a few of them it will have been worthwhile, and for the rest, it will be a good memory about people who care.

You offer somewhere to talk about life and you listen, two very important things.Probably you are the only one who does that for these girls.
