Phobias...

What are you afraid of? I'm not afraid to admit I'm afraid of the dentist and everything to do with that place, I'm afraid of bananas, of being tied up, crowded malls, the edges of tall buildings or balconies, getting food on my hands (I hate that, when you're doing the dishes and there are all those crumbs and things *shudder* hmmm but maybe I hate it more than I'm afraid of it)... I'm not sure what else.

We were looking at a phobia site tonight... http://phobialist.com/
These would be some of my favourites, for the absurdity, to me. Of course, to others, they might be really serious so no offence intended, team... it's just, when you have fears, it's fun to laugh at other people's fears, to minimise the seriousness of your own. So... I did.

Geniophobia- Fear of chins
Deipnophobia- Fear of dinner conversations (that's how I met Steve really - long story!)
Kyphophobia- Fear of stooping
Proctophobia- Fear of rectums
Telephonophobia- Fear of telephones (I just like saying the word really)
Theophobia- Fear of gods or religion (plenty of those on the Net)
Xanthophobia- Fear of the color yellow

Phobophobia- Fear of phobias

and the best of all...

Zemmiphobia- Fear of the great mole rat!! You look, it's really there!

There's nobody about. Think I'll go write now. Working on Breathing Space. And I'm finally falling in love with Nick all over again, and he's flying now. OMG I love him... and he's not gay *g* - but *sigh* he's not real either...
Anyway, I haven't slept more than six hours a night for ages. It's wearing thin. I'm going to go see how I get on at least going to bed before eleven. Just have to hang out the white shirts... see you round.

It's a pretty comprehensive list of fears really, but I'm struggling to describe what I'm afraid of. Like you I hate dealing slimy leftover food, and grids and toilets too... but I'm not afraid, I just really dislike it...
I don't like phoning strangers either but I do it and I don't think it's really a fear...
I don't like people being ill, but I'm not afraid of illness as such, and I'm not afraid of death, nor even disability, I'm sometimes frightened when people throw up, I certainly don't much like being there, I used to be much worse about that but a combination of pregnancy and small children cured me of the worst of it...

I'm glad that Nick has woken up and come to life for you, I'm looking forward to meeting him!

Our white shirts are hanging on the line too!

Hee, maybe you're just really, really well balanced. I've always thought that you have a measured and level headed approach to most things I deal with anyway!!! Which I really appreciate!

-Our white shirts are hanging on the line too!
Luckily it was warm enough for them to dry overnight on the fold out line inside!

Oh, I'd love to rave about him, he's so cute! I just had something missing before and then I had a brainwave and now, I can't wait to get back to him! It's very odd but very exciting!

Heights - badly and irrationally.
Local youth gangs - rational, really.
Driving in unknown city centres - based on experience.
When people say 'I need to speak to you' but don't tell you what about. - possibly stems from when my headmistress called me out of class to tell me my father had died.
Being shut in a dark cupboard. And no, it has never happened to me and the fear is totally based on a story I once read.
Large cockroaches The kind you get in tropical countries.Irrational?

I think fears are very distinct from hates or dislikes. There is less control and less logic. I tend towards telephonophobia but it isn't full blown ...

Well, some of your fears are, as you say, rational and some are irrational, and that's pretty sensible.

-possibly stems from when my headmistress called me out of class to tell me my father had died.
That must have been awful. What a way to get the news. Boarding school, huh?

-I think fears are very distinct from hates or dislikes. There is less control and less logic. I tend towards telephonophobia but it isn't full blown ...
I wonder if that would be rather common with net users! Like this is a way of communicating without fear?

-Large cockroaches The kind you get in tropical countries.Irrational?
Didn't you try to bring one back? *g*

Yeah, boarding school has definite drawbacks! I can even remember the picture on her study wall, and the weather. I thought I was in trouble and couldn't think what for, and then ... and of course I had to wait all day while someone came to get me. She should have waited to tell me but I suppose she didn't know when they'd arrive.

I definitely prefer the internet. You 'speak' at your own speed at a time of your own choosing and you can think before you speak! Not that I always manage that ...

Fledge and I prefer not to remember my 'passenger'!!!!

I like the telephone with friends but not with strangers... for many purposes the internet is far better than the phone... but sometimes I like to hear the other person's voice, you can hide what you are feeling so effectively in print, but in conversation it's much clearer - an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the circumstances!!

As for cockroaches, have I told you about the one in Vanuatu that we accidentally sprayed with fly spray?

I wanna hear about the cockcroach!

Fly spray does kill cockroaches, but it does it very slowly... and their dying involves extremely frenetic flying around the room (yes the cockroaches in Vanuatu fly). This particular cockroach decided that his 'dying swan" routine would involve landing on my head and crawling through my hair...
I don't much like cockroaches, but it is completely rational!!!

My other cockroach story nearly put me off coffee!!!!

Maybe having a face to attach to the voice makes the telephone easier. I quite like talking to friends but they don't always phone at convenient moments. My cousin almost always rings just as a pan is about to boil. I absolutely hate phoning strangers, even banks etc. and will put it off for ever or get Colin to do it for me - he thinks I'm mad!

Do I want to know about the Vanuatu incident? :)

I find cordless telephones minimise inconvenience from calls, I talk to people in the bath, hanging out washing, cooking tea... they don't need to know...now the only problem is when people call and I'm about to go!!

But I still don't like making business calls much!

As for the Vanuatu incident, Jenny was unwise enough to pursue this story and ended up screaming a bit!! - I suggest you look there if you would like to hear about cockroaches and other strange inhabitants in Vanuatu!

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia- Fear of long words.
That was always my favorite. As for my fears, I'm not sure, other than my one really irrational one. I've always been afraid of those large costumed people, like sports mascots, chuck e. cheese, and the disney world people. I know it's completely irrational, because it's just a person inside, but it still freaks me out!

No time for more now, gotta go to work! I'll catch up on your other posts later too!

Hee, that sure is a long word!

You really hate those big mascots? Gosh, isn't America full of them?! we have a few at the rugby, I think. A lion for Wellington...

I hope you had a good day at work. Nice to hear from you there too *g*

Yup, they're everywhere. And I just can't seem to get past it!

Work went okay. It was really slow, that's why my boss didn't mind me taking a couple of minutes to e-mail you. I thought I had the address with me, but it turned out I didn't, and I don't have time to go to the post office for a few days now, so I really wanted to send it out today.

I wonder what you can do? Have a turn inside a suit? *shudder* someone does that in the Carl Hiassen book I'm reading just now!

Yeah, I don't know. Whenever I see one, I tell myself that it's just a person inside, that I'm being completely irrational, but I still get scared. I figured I would have outgrown it by now, but apparently not!

Ooh, you're thoughtful to think of me
Just a little something. After all you've sent me, I wanted to send a little something in return. It's nothing much, but I hope you like it!
