Lahar!!!

OMG, I didn't tell you about the lahar that burst out of Mount Ruapehu yesterday. Check out the photo gallery inside here

It's in the area where I'll be taking my 'road trip'! Fascinating, the thermal activity in the core of this North Island! A lahar (which is fluid that bursts from a crater lake, mud and volcanic water) swept down in the dark in 1953 at Tangiwai and took out a rail bridge, just before a train came along. It was a disaster, killing 151 people. This time, the warning systems all worked well, and no one was killed. A lahar is like concrete, it flows but then it can set solid as a rock (btw lahar is an Indonesian word for mudslide).

So. Stuff happens, huh.

It will probably be interesting - especially as nobody was hurt this time. Montserrat, where we stayed in the Caribbean, has had another major erruption. Colin is fascinated by volcanoes but I would prefer to be a long way off. Photographs would be appreciated!

Colin might want to go back then!

And I'll take all the photos I can.
