So how was your day?

They are calling it a baptism by fire. I call it a bit unfair. But yesterday the father of one of our senior girls died suddenly. They asked me before school if I would lead the girls in prayer at the start of Period Four. A decade of the rosary please, then one girl will pray in Samoan then can you finish with a prayer? Yes, the whole school. In the gym. Thanks.

OMG. I wasn't quite ready for that, I don't know a lot of the girls yet and they don't know who the hell I am. Well, I guess most of them might, it's a small college. Still, there they were, all three hundred or so, and after the Principal spoke, she just kind of looked at me to get on with it. So I did, desperately hoping I didn't miscount the ten Hail Mary's LOL!

Afterwards, at lunchtime, I could see some of the teachers who hadn't spoken to me yet just looking at me, as if I'd shown a side they hadn't imagined or something. Or maybe I was becoming a person and not just a reliever. Or what, I don't know. I don't even care what they think. Several people said I wrote a really good prayer. Hit the nail on the head. That was nice.

Heh, I said to my friend, I should have been a writer...

I'd imagine that most of them were thinking how glad they were that it was you who had to lead the prayers, not them!!!I'm sure you did well though!

Oh yes indeedy. I mean, not one of them is clamouring for my job. Any of the RE teachers could have applied but uh-uh, no one in the whole country wants it right now LOL!

-Good grief, a baptism of fire indeed
Heh! Yeah. I hope the rest of the school community stays in good health for the duration of my time there!

Respect maybe? I hope so.

Good for you...sounds like you did well, in spite of a situation that would have made anyone anxious!
