Gilbert Grape

Christy has been studying What's Eating Gilbert Grape this past fortnight. I got quite excited because it's always been a favourite movie of mine. It's as old as she is, just about, and of course, Leonardo and Johnny Depp are big stars these days. They were just lads back then, and I think they did a wonderful job. I know Leonard Maltin didn't give the movie a great review, but, as I often do, I disagree with him. I think it's a well structured movie with a great climax, the death of the mother. I love the character of Becky, the girl in the caravan. She's fantastic. A kind of mini-Chocolat character, and Juliette Lewis' character does remind me of Juliette Binoche's in Chocolat, both in tolerance of others and in physical appearance.

We sat down and watched it this afternoon, after my brother in law managed to put an old video copy onto a DVD for us.

I especially love the moment when Becky meets the mother, and the mother, who has been a powerful force throughout the movie, is suddenly embarrassed and shaken and says haltingly, "I wasn't always like this," and Becky pauses, looks down at herself and says brightly but sympathetically, "I wasn't always like this!" It's really touching, and illustrates how she shows the enormously obese mother instant acceptance, just as she accepted Arnie and his disabilities with joy and good grace, and a hefty measure of understanding.

It's a great movie about tolerance, about being trapped in a small town, about the fear of mega stores and their impact on small retail outlets, about lust and love and trust and tolerance, about huge responsibility and about moving on.

I've felt crappy all day, but this afternoon Christy took me shopping and made me buy some new clothes for school! It's amazing, I haven't done that for.... years LOL! I didn't like doing that. I hate seeing myself in the changing room mirrors, I absolutely hate seeing me. The woman in the store offered her services but pointed out that Christy seemed to be doing a good job by herself, and thankfully, she left us alone *g*
