Days off... and a death...

I am so lucky, I get tomorrow off. I said I'd maybe need every second Thursday off, to catch my breath, and the boss said did I want more. I didn't. And I said not to give me this Thursday but Chris, who does the relief, insisted. She wants me in one piece all term, so if that means getting relief for me once a fortnight, that's fine by her!

Sadder news was my friend's father, Mr K, who died this morning. This is the friend I spent the day with last week, catching up as we do each term, the one whose son had leukaemia when he was little. Her mum died a few years back and her dad today. He was not well, with quite rapidly advancing dementia, but the family collectively were supporting him at his home. Thing was, he didn't appear at Mass on Sunday, so my friend's husband, Kim, popped round to the house, and Mr K had had a massive stroke and was lying on the bathroom floor. They got him to hospital but the stroke was too severe and he died peacefully this morning. Kim phoned and said he was smiling. The funeral will be on Friday afternoon. I guess I will have to miss my DRS cluster meeting, because this is important. Mr K was a hard worker, and a good parishioner, a painter, who painted more than half the school and presbytery at some time or other over the years, and both of his daughters are my friends. He often came to Mass early, mostly because he lost track of time, and he'd sit at the back and smile at us as we practised our music. I'll miss him a lot. He was an Irish man, who went back to his village after forty years away. He'd left as a teenager. He went back, wandered into the pub, and swears that some locals just nodded at him and said calmly, after forty years, 'Now then, Seamus.' !!!

Do enjoy your day off whatever you end up doing with it!

Sorry to hear about Mr K. it sounds as though the timing was good for him, possibly for the family too... that doesn't change the grief and sadness at his passing though, love and prayers to all of you who will miss him.

Thanks. For the love and prayers too. He was a really kind and gentle man, and I always had a lot of respect for him.

I feel quite guilty having a day off, but then I look around the house and think, I still have a life here as well, it's like I have two lives now! And I can't neglect this one just because the other one pays better *g* and it was nice to take the boys to school at a reasonable hour.

The jug is boiling for coffee... so I shall indeed have a happy day, I'm sure of it!

I think I will join you for a coffee before I go to bed!
