So! The Mass of a Thousand Teens went off better than I could have imagined with no real problems. I had to sit right at the front. I enjoyed it though, as once all the planning is done, there isn't much else I could do. The teenagers were all pretty good, because it was a long Mass with long songs! But the priest was rather one-sided, in fact all the teachers from down there seem to think they're better than us (their boys' college is twice the size of ours, but we have a sister school on the other side of town, they don't). It's apparently a long-standing issue!

So it's over, and I can relax. I wrote the welcoming speech for our Assistant Principal (she had to be Principal on the day), and is a Presbyterian - I suggested she speak about Mary and she said I'd better write it as she didn't know what to say about Mary. So yesterday I told my class to be quiet and pretended to be Sam Seaborn for quarter of an hour - and she read my speech word for word LOL! I have Sam's education speech on my classroom door at the moment (since I'm teaching social justice) - the speech about the silver bullet. I remember Pam used to have it on her classroom wall so I had done that ever since at my last school. Our boss read it the other day while showing a visitor around, and said she liked it. I added this old favourite at the bottom,
It'll be a great day when schools have all the money they need and the air force has to hold a cake stall to buy a new bomber.

And so tomorrow I'll bus up to my old university, Victoria, for a day long seminar on ethics and philosophy. Not exactly my cup of tea but the school wanted me to go. And it should be my day off! But it should be relaxing, no teaching involved. Mock exams start tomorrow too, so it'll be quiet around the school until the middle of next week, and that's five out of my seven classes out - HOORAY! So. That's me, heading for bed as usual!

But you really ought to have a day off next week in lieu... Just because you enjoy it doesn't mean it isn't work!!

And the course today felt like work, it was so tiring, one-two hour lectures at a time and all about philosophy and did God create the world and should people use drugs in sport because of the length of Ian Thorpe's feet and what are the ethics of nanotechnology and IVF and so on!!! Good stuff on the whole but I found myself thinking, who really cares how the world got here, and I know I'm not meant to think that but I really feel it's an awful waste of energy and learning to focus a life's work on that kind of thing! I know it may sound shallow but *sigh* anyway, I know plenty about it now *g*

You mean like philosophers and physicists and that sort of person...?

I have to say that sometimes it seems better to be concentrating on making people's lives better in the here and now, but of course if people hadn't thought about it all, we'd probably be living in caves and life would be nasy, brutish and short!!

You're right, of course! I just guess it's not for me really, but I'll have to take it all on board and just be a better educated, well rounded person in future! I suspect those heavy philosophical issues have less bearing down here than they do in a more 'historical' culture like that of the UK. d

I like that you were a speechwriter! And I love that Sam quote too!

Heh, speechwriter for a day! I can see now how a speechwriter would sit there going over the words as they are said!

I'm so glad the Mass went well. School rivalries are a strange thing...
Hope the ethics thing goes well.. and Yay for senior exams!

The ethics thing was long and deep and philosophical. But I have a good CD/DVD of resources for the class for next year, whoever takes it!!! I really felt like sleeping though. I'm not used to being so sleepy during the day!
