Hooray, hooray, it's Friday night. We had a late dinner because after Flippaball, Christy, Asher and I spun across town to St Mary's to watch them play basketball against my college, St Caths. St Mary's were much better but it was good to see some of the naughtiest girls from my school trying so incredibly hard to play well on the court. It was hard summoning up the energy to go though. If I'd thought about it for more than five seconds, I would have said no!

Thinking with fright about what moth2fic said yesterday about iron and severe anaemia, I phoned my GP this morning to ask for a form to get an iron test. The usual nurse was away and the conversation went something like this:
I'm a patient of Rob's and I'd like a form to get an iron test, please.
A form?
Yes. For the lab.
Hold on, I'll get the nurse...
Hi, I'm a patient of Rob's and I'd like a form to get an iron test, please.
An iron test?
Yes.
A form?
Yes.
A piece of paper?
Yes, a form to take to the lab cos you guys can't find my veins.
Oh, a form. What did you want to test for?
Iron levels.
Iron levels?
Yes.
You want to test your iron levels?
Yes.
Oh. Oh. Um, I don't know. Oh wait, I know the form. What boxes do I tick? (it has about forty coded boxes)
Well, I dunno, you should know.
I don't know.
Well, I think Beth usually ticks ferritin for one...
That sounds good.
Yes, doesn't it. (I'm starting to get really irritated but trying to be nice)
Hold on, I'll look at your records. Do I test for - (she named some things)
I don't know! (I wail desperately) How would I know? I'm an English teacher.
Well, it's your test, you should know what's being tested.
No I shouldn't. I wouldn't understand it even if I did know the names.
Well, I think you should. You need to be responsible.
But I don't know about that stuff.
Still, you should know, not me.
You're the nurse.
I'll look at your file... (pause) I'll tick CRT and iron studies...
Uh, sounds good, thanks.
Tell the lab to add any they think I missed...

Lab: we can only test the things they tick...

How frustrating...and incompetent! I would haver thought that doing iron tests was a very standard procedure considering how often they do those tests during pregnancy...

And it's not your responsibility to know - they're the professionals or at least they're supposed to be!

I agree! Although I might try to memorise it next time, just in case!! I could have even ticked a whole lot of extra boxes, had the whole treatment and I doubt anyone would have been the wiser.

And yeah, it's a standard, common test, for heaven's sake! I agree!

Yeah I have a friend with lots of health issues and she has to spend a lot of time explaining to new doctors and nurses what is wrong with her and her various medications, just so they can treat her... seems extraordinary really!!

So have you you had the tests? When do you get the results?

I popped over to the lab at lunchtime and had the test, but I guess it takes a few days to get the results, since it's the weekend. Then the doctor usually posts me a letter with an angry pen mark circling the lack of iron and a note scrawled 'eat more red meat.' I file them in my file of 'Stupid Letters from Rob'

But I reckon your diet is pretty good on the iron side of things anyway... it's not like you never eat red meat or spinach - now if you were short of potassium that would be much more understandable given your aversion to all things banana!!

Yeah, you're right, I eat red meat, and spinach and stuff that has good haem absorption like mussels and dried apricots. I probably don't have enough vitamin C if I was really honest. I dunno. That helps absorption. *shrug*

Yikes! *shudder* bananas... I haven't given too much thought to how much potassium I might have - or not have. Although I do notice I feel better when I take kelp. Don't know why. But I won't be taking any bananas any time soon *g*

Somebody said doctors and nurses onlypractise medicine, which is why some of them aren't very good at it...

'How would I know? I'm an English teacher.'
This might turn into one of my favourite 'catch phrases'.

Meanwhile, I'm glad you're trying to do something practical and hope the medical authorities do their part!!

Hee! It sounded better and less mystifying than 'I'm a religion teacher'!!! That always raises a myriad questions!

Well, I am hoping it's not serious and then we can laugh some more!! Heh. Crazy medical professionals!

Wow. That's just sad. Slightly amusing I must admit, sounds like a comedy routine, but still sad.

Yeah, I guess you're right, it's kind of sad, I mean, health isn't like teaching, the girls won't die if I don't know the answer but in medicine... but I can still laugh about it for the moment! Better than getting myself irritated *g*
